Woods TorchbearerJoin the Festivities: Celebrate “One” Indiana

The Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay is designed to promote and unify the state by connecting people, communities and regions. Hoosiers will also symbolically “pass the torch,” connecting past and current generations to future ones to IGNITE our future.

Carrying the Torch: A Once-in-a-Lifetime Opportunity

Peer-nominated Torch bearers will transport the torch in ways that reflect our Hoosier heritage and the unique members of our communities — via horseback, wheelchair, canoe, combine, running or walking…

Patterned after the Olympic Torch Relay, Indiana’s version will pass through all 92 of the state’s counties, cover 2300+ miles over a six-week period, averaging 60 miles per day.

Celebration Stops Along the Route

Festivities will vary from town to town, as communities will be permitted to customize their celebration. A special Mobile Visitor Center will be created to escort the torch on its journey and promote Indiana.

The relay will culminate in Indianapolis on the Statehouse campus where an Everlasting Light will be lit as a legacy to Indiana’s last 200 years and inspiration for generations of Hoosiers in the next 200 years.

Join the festivities and celebrate “One” Indiana with your fellow Hoosiers. The success of this initiative will depend on broad-based participation and cooperation from cities and towns across the state.

NOTE: Bicentennial Torch Relay route is a work in progress.

In communities across the state, many people are excited and ready to honor our state’s history. Together, we can celebrate in a way that engages all residents, past, present and future.

As Indiana 2016 Bicentennial Commission leaders, we are privileged to play a role in a special time in our state’s history – our 200th birthday celebration. This statewide grassroots bicentennial commemoration will strive to showcase the best of Indiana in 2016 and beyond.
