History of the Indiana Veterans’ Home

Originally created to care for veterans of the Civil War, the Indiana Veterans’ Home welcomed our first resident in 1896. Located on 250+ acres in West Lafayette, our campus has transformed over the years into a thriving community of independent living and comprehensive care for veterans and their spouses.

Today: Serving Veterans and Their Spouses

IVH Ernie Pyle HallIt is our privilege to serve veterans and their spouses by providing compassionate medical care, meaningful activities and tasty meals for our residents. We strive to build camaraderie among our residents, community and staff. Residents enjoy our library and media center, gardens, crafts and hobbies, chapel, beauty shop, transportation services and a busy schedule of recreation and activities.
The Indiana Veterans’ Home provides several levels of care for our residents:

  • Independent living
  • Short-term rehabilitative care for those recovering from surgery, illness or injury
  • Around-the-clock nursing care
  • Dedicated memory care unit for those with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias

Our residents receive premier nursing care, with board-certified physicians and onsite specialty care, including:

  • Physical and occupational therapy
  • Speech and hearing therapy
  • Respiratory therapy
  • Podiatry
  • Dentistry
  • Optometry

Admission Criteria

  • An honorably discharged veteran of the United States armed forces, or the spouse (or surviving spouse) of an honorably discharged veteran of the United States armed forces
  • An Indiana resident for at least one (1) year immediately preceding application for admission (residency waivers may apply for service members who enlisted from, or discharged to, the state of Indiana)

Applicants must also pass a criminal background check conducted by the Indiana Veterans’ Home.

Additional Information

The Indiana Veterans’ Home accepts private payment, insurance, Medicare* and Medicaid. We are a Medicaid-certified facility and can assist our residents with Medicaid applications.
