The Indiana Veterans' Home is the only veterans' home in the state of Indiana. It is located in West Lafayette on 250+ wooded acres overlooking the Wabash River. It is easily accessed from both Interstate I-65 and In SR 43.
Following the Civil War, there was an unmet need to provide care for veterans who had incurred injuries and/or chronic disease during the war. In 1886, the current site for a state soldiers home was suggested at the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) encampment. The GAR passed a resolution in 1892 urging the establishment of the State Soldiers Home. The Indiana General Assembly appropriated funds in 1895 for the construction of a facility consisting of small cottages, each representing an Indiana county. The first resident was accepted in 1896.
In 1976, the facility was renamed the "Indiana Veterans' Home" (IVH). The campus has transformed throughout the years and is now a thriving community providing independent living and comprehensive care for veterans and their spouses.
The Indiana Veterans' Home provides a beautiful, healthy and home-like environment for veterans and their spouses to live. Residents enjoy a variety of onsite and offsite activities, excellent health care, nutritious homemade meals and a rich history that only a facility such as IVH can provide.
