Legacy Projects > Indiana Statehood Day Indiana Statehood Day

On December 11, 1816, Indiana was admitted as the 19th state to join the Union. Each year, on Statehood Day, downtown Indianapolis comes alive with many opportunities for 4th grade groups to celebrate Indiana’s birthday. Four locations hold exciting and educational activities for 4th graders and have a formal Statehood Day program including guest speakers from state government as well as the reading of a winning Statehood Day Essay supported by the Indiana Center for the Book.

Q&A with Legacy Project Coordinator Jennifer Hodge

What do you consider the key accomplishment of your Legacy Project?

  • Kicking off the Bicentennial year on Dec. 11 in 2015 and being one of the final celebrations on Dec. 9, 2016.

Describe a highlight or most memorable moment related to your Legacy Project.

  • The participation of First Lady, Karen Pence and Governor Pence in 2015 and returning in 2016 as VP and First Lady elect of the US in 2016. And the participation of 500 4th graders in a morning of Bicentennial related activities culminating with the student essay winner reading their essay in the program.

How/where are you preserving information and artifacts related to your Legacy Project?

  • In the Tour Office files. The Archives holds the Constitutionals and Elm pieces.
