Most construction or remodeling projects—fences, sheds, additions, pools, decks, porches, signs and new homes—require a building permit issued by the Building & Zoning Department. Before starting work, contact the Building Commissioner to determine what permits you need. Residential applications must include drawings showing the front, side and rear elevations and a site plan to confirm setbacks and drainage. All contractors must hold a valid license for their trade and be registered in Delaware County; hiring an unlicensed contractor could void your insurance.
If your project disturbs soil, you may also need a sediment and erosion control permit issued through the Muncie Sanitary District. Permit fees are modest and based on the number of inspections required.
