Snowplow Training Wheels

This INDOT innovation improves snowplow training by adding wheels to a training plow, allowing new drivers to lower the blade without damaging dry pavement. Currently, trainees practice before snowfall, but they cannot experience how the truck handles with the plow down. The training wheels make it possible to simulate real plowing conditions safely.
With the plow able to touch the ground, drivers can learn how the truck reacts when turning, when to lift the blade, and how to clear intersections effectively. This added experience helps new operators feel more confident and prepared before their first winter storm, supporting safer and more effective snow and ice operations.
