Tow Plow Improvements

Tow Plow Cameras and Light

Submitted by: Jared Heiby (LaPorte District)

INDOT introduced new cameras and lighting on tow plow trucks to improve visibility and safety for operators and the traveling public. Drivers often struggled to see the tow plow and the area around it, which led to several close calls and collisions. Adding side and rear cameras gives operators a clear view of the plow while it is deployed and alerts them if a vehicle is following too closely.

A 360‑degree light mounted near the passenger side mirror also improves visibility, helping drivers see the tow plow’s path during operation.

These upgrades can be installed by maintenance shops and provide a significant safety improvement. With better visibility and fewer blind spots, operators can maneuver tow plows more confidently and reduce the risk of crashes during winter operations.

Tow Plow Lights and Mirror Upgrades

Submitted by: Mark Welch (Greenfield District)

Operating a tow plow is challenging, especially during winter storms when visibility is limited. This INDOT innovation improves sightlines by upgrading lighting and mirror systems on tow plow trucks. Better visibility helps operators see the plow’s position and the roadway more clearly, which reduces the chance of an incident.

Improved visibility not only helps prevent crashes, it also keeps the tow plow in service during critical winter events. Keeping this equipment on the road supports safer travel conditions and helps crews maintain Indiana’s roadways more effectively.

Reflective Plow Stickers and Flap Anchors

Submitted by: Julian Roudabush (Seymour District)

This INDOT innovation improves visibility and safety during winter operations. Crews apply reflective tape to the lower half of the plow, placing it directly in the line of sight for most drivers. The added reflectivity helps motorists see the plow sooner and gives them more time to react.

To keep the plow’s rubber flap stable, crews also use weighted anchors made from slat steel or square tubing. These simple additions help the flap stay in place and perform better during snow removal.

Together, the reflective stickers and flap anchors make plow operations safer for both crews and drivers.
