This page covers one of the 2022 innovation winners.

Dump Station Enclosure

Submitted by: Rodney Bergeron, Michelle Wilson, & Rhonda Gigg (LaPorte District)

This INDOT innovation improves air quality and employee safety in laboratory environments. The dump station enclosure creates a controlled downdraft system that pulls dust and airborne particles away from workers during material testing. This is especially important when handling materials that may generate silica dust, which can be harmful if inhaled.

The enclosure has already shown significant improvements in air quality in the testing lab, helping reduce the risk of exposure for staff. It is also simple and cost‑effective to implement, making it an accessible safety upgrade for facilities across the state.

By capturing dust at the source, the dump station enclosure supports a healthier workspace and strengthens INDOT’s commitment to employee safety.
