Hard Hat Identification

This INDOT innovation improves safety and communication on job sites by using hard hat colors to identify employee experience levels and roles at a glance. The color‑coded system helps crews quickly recognize who is new, who is experienced, and who is supervising work, creating a safer and more organized work environment.
INDOT’s hard hat identification colors are:
- Orange – New hires with less than one year of service
- Safety Green – Seasoned employees
- White – Supervisors
This simple visual system supports better awareness in the field and helps teams stay coordinated during daily operations.
