Alumni Association Membership

Actions to Take Now
Discuss your funeral wishes with your spouse.
Make sure your spouse knows the location and telephone number of the Retiree Services Office.
Decide on burial vs. cremation, military honors, and your final resting place.
Create a written plan that could help resolve some of the questions that might arise later.
Report a retiree death or death of SBP Annuitant to Defense Finance and Accounting Services (DFAS) Cleveland, OH.
Your Will
Create or update your will to document your wishes for your family.
Ensure that your will and all other official documents are maintained in a secure location known by your loved ones.
Store your original will with an attorney or in a fireproof home safe with your DD214s or Retirement Orders.
Determine your VA Burial Eligibility
Apply for a VA "Pre-Need Eligibility Determination" letter so your family has official proof that you qualify for a free burial in a VA National Cemetery.
Other options
- If choosing a private cemetery, secure funding for final expenses.
- Consider setting up a Pay-on-Death (POD) bank account or a small insurance policy.
- Pre-pay a funeral home.
Organize Your Documents – File, Don’t Pile!
Your future self will thank you for creating both digital and paper organized files of your documents (see next section).
DD214 and Signed Will
It is recommended that your vital documents, such as your DD214 and signed will, NOT be kept in a bank safe deposit box. Keep these items in a file or folder that is easily accessible to you and your family members who will need to establish eligibility for military honors, benefits and compensation.
