Holistic Health and Fitness

Indiana H2F

Holistic Health and Fitness represents a cultural shift from the industrial scale approaches of the past where massed formations received the same training in a one-size-fits-all approach. FM 7-22 Holistic Health and Fitness

Indiana Holistic Health and Fitness (INH2F) works to train, elevate, and retain the readiness of the force through integrated and standardized programs that empower soldiers and their families to live sustainable healthy lifestyles.

Our performance centers adhere to evidence-based programs and leverage the very latest in physiological assessment technologies to produce dynamic, personalized health and wellness plans for Guardsmen. These plans are designed by our health educator staff to assist clients in achieving specific long-term lifestyle goals.

The program uses body composition analysis, resting metabolic rate testing, V02 and strength measurements, coherence measurement of stress, individual coaching, wellness classes and general wellness education to assist clients in reaching their goals. Whether you’re struggling to achieve your wellness goals or are already a fitness expert, we’ve got something for you.

Five Domains of H2F

The five domains of the Holistic Health and Fitness program build the Army’s readiness goals and are based on the principles of optimization, individualization and immersion. The goal is to improve each soldier’s physical lethality and mental toughness by linking physical readiness, nutritional readiness, mental readiness, spiritual readiness and sleep readiness.H2F is designed to optimize the soldier’s personal readiness, reduce injury rates, improve rehabilitation after injury and increase the overall effectiveness of the Total Army.

Physical Readiness

Physical readiness is the ability to meet the physical demands of any duty or combat position, move lethally on the battlefield, accomplish the mission and continue to fight, win, and come home healthy.

Nutritional Readiness

Nutritional readiness is the ability to recognize, select, and consume the requisite food and drink to meet the physical and nonphysical demands of any duty or combat position, accomplish the mission and come home healthy.

Mental Readiness

Mental readiness is the ability to meet the mental demands of any combat or duty position, adapt successfully in the presence of extreme risk and adversity, accomplish the mission, and continue to fight and win.

Spiritual Readiness

Spiritual readiness includes the development of the personal qualities needed to sustain a person in times of stress, hardship, and tragedy. These qualities come from religious, philosophical, or human values and form the basis for character, disposition, decision making, and integrity.

Sleep Readiness

Sleep is the critical requirement for brain health and function. Sleep readiness is the ability to recognize and implement the requisite sleep principles and behaviors to support optimal brain function. In turn, sleep readiness underpins a Soldier’s ability to meet the physical and nonphysical demands of any duty or combat position, accomplish the mission, and continue to fight and win.

Army Combat Fitness Test

The Army Combat Fitness Test is the assessment for the physical domain of the Army's Holistic Health and Fitness System. As a general physical fitness test, an age and gender performance-normed scoring scale will be used to evaluate a soldier’s physical fitness.

50M TARGET – ACFT SUCCESS!

FY23 marks the year the Army Combat Fitness Test will be conducted, and scores recorded for record for the National Guard! H2F staff and facilities are here to help you ensure you are prepared and successful at each event. Trainers are assigned to battalions across the state and can aid in individualized workout plan development, stretching techniques, as well as specific focus/improvement areas.

ACFT TRAINING RESOURCES

ACFT events and standards can be found at www.army.mil/acft. Each event is detailed with a video demonstration, proper techniques, safety tips, and focused exercises to train for success in each event. H2F coaches are available to provide coaching, mentorship, and guidance when conducting your individual PT and ACFT preparation. The TeamBuildr App is currently available on a limited basis. Master Fitness Trainers are encouraged to work along side your H2F Coach to develop the most effective training plan that can be implemented at your units operational tempo.

H2F Services and Resources

Biofeedback

The emWave Stress Relief System helps people learn how to transform stress and stress-related emotions into free energy for personal and professional effectiveness while improving health and well-being. Emwave is a type of self-regulation that provides real-time visual monitoring. The goal of the program is to utilize positive thoughts and emotions to obtain optimal heart rate variability, or coherence.

Body Composition Analysis

If the changes you are making in your physical activity to lose weight are not producing changes on the scale, you may be losing fat but gaining muscle. We take your height, weight and blood pressure, then use the BODPOD, ultrasound or bioelectrical impedance to test your body fat percentage, or body mass index (BMI) to provide you with an accurate assessment. BODPOD uses air displacement to determine how much of the body is made up of fat, and is second to water displacement as the most accurate measure of body fat percentage. Ultrasound uses sound waves to determine body composition. The Inbody 270 is another method of measuring BMI using bioelectrical impedance. The test takes less than a minute and also provide your specific Basal Metabolic Rat, or calories burned at rest. Regardless of which method of testing BMI is chosen, the process takes only about 10 minutes.

Weight Management Metabolic Testing

Resting Metabolic Rate is an assessment used to measure the number of calories your body needs to maintain its current weight over a 24-hour period of rest. We collect data for 15 minutes and extrapolate that data to estimate your calorie needs over 24 hours. The test requires you to lie down on a table and wear a mask throughout the test to measure your oxygen and carbon dioxide levels. These levels can tell us how much oxygen is consumed by the body during rest, which, in turn, is used to estimate your caloric needs. This test can help you make dietary changes to reduce or add calories to your diet.

Fitness Assessment Exercise Testing

We can determine your cardiorespiratory fitness levels and appropriate training zones for your fitness regimen by measuring your heart rate using V02 submaximal testing, where you will walk or run on a treadmill until you reach 85 percent of your estimated maximum heart rate. We test and monitor your strength and flexibility to help you track your progress. Lack of strength and flexibility can lead to injury and predispose you for future injuries. During this process, we ensure you receive the utmost care by adhering to strict safety protocols, including having you fill out a pre-screening health and consent form prior to your assessment. We may also require a release from your primary care physician if for any reason you fail the pre-screening questionnaire.

Wellness Education, Training and Counseling

Our health educators work with you one-on-one to discuss the results of your assessments and to set your goals. All your encounters at our performance centers are documented and securely stored locally in your client folder, which we provide for your use to work toward improving your wellness. At your request, we’ll provide your assessment results and your fitness plan to your physician. We offer classes on topics including tobacco cessation, basic ways to raise your metabolism, stress education, sleep improvement and Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT) essentials.

What to Expect

Schedule

Schedule your testing appointments (30-90 minutes each). Not recommended to schedule all tests on same day. After scheduling your appointment, you will receive an email with instructions.

Visit

Arrive 15 minutes prior to your appointment time to fill out forms, meet your health educator and discuss a plan of action. Typically, you will keep the same health educator throughout the program. You will leave your appointment with all the testing results completed that day.

Follow Up

Very important! Be sure to schedule at least one follow-up visit after testing. Best results are obtained when multiple follow-ups are completed. Follow-ups for continued health coaching are recommended every 2-3 months.
