James Redkey

Rev. James Redkey

Rev. James Redkey was a pivotal figure in the history of Redkey, Indiana, leaving a lasting legacy as a pioneer, preacher, and community leader.

Early Life and Family: Born on May 14, 1813, in Highland County, Ohio, James Redkey spent his formative years in Ohio. He married Elvira Hartman, and together, they had six children: Mary Jane, Martin, Nancy, Drusilla, John William, and Alexander Nation. After Elvira's passing in 1854, James remarried twice—first to Jane Evans in October 1855 and later to Mary Adams on August 31, 1871.

Move to Indiana and Community Development: In 1856, James purchased land from William H. Wade near the village of Mount Vernon in Jay County, Indiana. Anticipating the arrival of the railroad, he platted this land into lots, contributing to the town's expansion. His addition was recorded in 1867, and when the town sought a post office, it adopted the name "Redkey" in his honor.

Religious Leadership: James, a dedicated Methodist Episcopal preacher, served congregations throughout Jay County. His ministry was instrumental in nurturing the spiritual life of the growing community.

Death and Legacy: October 21, 1888, James Redkey passed away in Redkey, Indiana. He is interred at Hillcrest Cemetery in Redkey, where his grave serves as a testament to his foundational role in the town's history.

Through his vision and leadership, James Redkey transformed a modest settlement into a thriving community that proudly bears his name.
