The town’s roots trace back to 1836, when the Wade family became the first settlers. Originally known as the Wade Settlement and briefly platted as Mt. Vernon, the area was renamed Redkey in 1856 after Reverend James Redkey laid out the town site. Officially incorporated in 1883, Redkey grew alongside the railroads and industries that shaped much of Indiana’s early economic boom.
While our past is full of hardworking pioneers, canning factories, and coal trains, our present is filled with people who care deeply about preserving what makes Redkey special—its charm, resilience, and sense of belonging.
