About Redkey Indiana
Tucked into the heart of Jay County, Redkey, Indiana is a small town with a big heart and a rich heritage. With a population of just over 1,400, Redkey offers the kind of tight-knit community where neighbors greet each other by name and lifelong friendships are forged on front porches, in parks, and along hometown streets.
The town’s roots trace back to 1836, when the Wade family became the first settlers. Originally known as the Wade Settlement and briefly platted as Mt. Vernon, the area was renamed Redkey in 1856 after Reverend James Redkey laid out the town site. Officially incorporated in 1883, Redkey grew alongside the railroads and industries that shaped much of Indiana’s early economic boom.
While our past is full of hardworking pioneers, canning factories, and coal trains, our present is filled with people who care deeply about preserving what makes Redkey special—its charm, resilience, and sense of belonging.
As the saying goes around here,
“If ya ain’t from here, you wouldn’t understand us.”
It’s a nod to the unique spirit that defines Redkey — a blend of grit, warmth, humor, and pride that you can’t quite explain unless you’ve lived it.
Today, Redkey blends its rich history with forward momentum. The town’s historic buildings, annual traditions, and strong civic involvement reflect generations of care and commitment. Town leaders, volunteers, and residents are working hard to revitalize Redkey, from park improvements and utility upgrades to fostering local businesses and community events.
Whether you're a long-time resident, a returning visitor, or discovering Redkey for the first time, you'll find a town that's proud of where it's been and excited for where it's going.
Welcome to Redkey — a town where history lives on and community leads the way.
