Onboarding Resources

This page provides an overview of the onboarding process for new employees at the Indiana Department of Correction, offering guidance and support as staff begin their roles. Onboarding includes required training, role-specific preperation, and access to key systems and resources. Requirements vary based on position and work location.

New Employee Training (Preservice Academy) is designed to introduce new correctional employees to the field of corrections and employment as a correctional professional with the Indiana Department of Correction. The 4-week new employee training includes a mixture of classroom and practicum exercises, along with 4 weeks of On-the-Job training with a certified Field Training Officer.

What New Employee Training May Include:

  • New employee orientation and required paperwork
  • Personal protection and safety training
  • Security skills and procedures
  • First Aid, CPR, AED
  • Report writing
  • Bias and diversity in corrections
  • Career development expectations

Training Varies by Roles

Onboarding requirements differ depending on position and work location.

Facility-Based Positions may complete structured onboarding and training that includes the Preservice Academy, on-the-job training (OJT) with Field Training Officers (FTOs), and post-assignment mentoring.

Central Office and Administrative Positions follow a role-specific onboarding process focused on job duties, systems access, and department orientation.
