A Citation Has Been Issued - NOW WHAT?
The Infraction Diversion Program (IDP) is a voluntary program for qualifying drivers who are charged with certain traffic offenses. When a driver successfully completes this program, the traffic ticket is dismissed and no conviction or points for that ticket will appear on the driver’s record. Failure to successfully complete the program, however, will result in the ticket being “re-docketed” and prosecuted (note that there will be no refund of IDP fees for any reason). The Infraction Diversion Program makes every effort to notify eligible drivers by mail prior to their initial court hearing. To learn about the eligibility requirements for the IDP program, go to the Monroe County Prosecuting Attorney.
I want my day in court! - The date set at the bottom of your citation is an initial hearing that you are required to attend if your ticket has not been paid or resolved prior to that date. If you wish to contest the ticket, you are entitled to your day in court. Traffic court is conducted on Fridays at 1:00 pm. Just appear on the “Appear by Date” found near the bottom of the ticket. You also may complete and submit a waiver requesting the case be set for a bench trial where you will appear before one of our judges with the issuing officer present.
Need More Time to Pay the Ticket? - Contact a Clerk’s Office staff member who will be happy to assist you with an extension. If an extension to pay the infraction is requested, call (812) 349-2614 and request an extension PRIOR to your APPEAR BY DATE. Or call the Traffic Division (812) 335-7274 or (812) 349-2609.
Better Speaking with a Live Person and Fix a Ticket? - Expired plates, expired license, equipment failure, headlights, muffler, and illegal window tint violations may be dismissed with proof of the violation being resolved within (5) days from the date of citation. Proof is to be presented to the Monroe County Clerk’s Office. The (5) days applies to the time required of the alleged offender to resolve the cited violation, not necessarily when the case can be dismissed. If you have questions about your ticket, verify that your ticket is in our court case management system prior to calling our traffic division: https://public.courts.in.gov/mycase/#/vw/Search
Feel free to contact the Traffic Division (812) 335-7274 or (812) 349-2609 who may verify via phone that the violation has been resolved.
