Welcome to the Highway Department
Monroe County Highway Department is responsible for the planning, design, construction, maintenance, and operation of a transportation network that includes over 708 miles of roads, 156 bridges, over 3,450 culverts, and over 9,300 traffic signs and signals. The highway staff reports directly to the Monroe County Board of Commissioners.
Maintenance activities performed by the department include, but are not limited to, repairing potholes, resurfacing roadways, clearing debris & vegetation from the right-of way, street sweeping, snow removal, grading gravel roads, and sign repair and replacement.
Operational activities include, but are not limited to, right-of-way permitting, responding to citizen complaints, coordinating with other government agencies, and responding to emergencies.
The Highway Department also has administration duties associated with the Monroe County Traffic Commission, Monroe County Drainage Board and providing support to various other commissions.
