Travel Advisories and Burn Bans

Travel Advisories

There are three levels of travel conditions a county may set according to IC 10-14-3-29.5. A Travel Advisory means that routine travel or activities may be difficult, and individuals should use caution or avoid those areas. A Travel Watch means that conditions are threatening the safety of the public. Only essential travel is recommended during a Travel Watch. A Travel Warning, otherwise known as a Travel Ban, means that travel is restricted to emergency workers only.

A Travel Warning may only be issued as a formal State of Emergency and requires ratification by the County Commissioners. The EMA Director has the authority to issue Advisories and Watches, but typically does so with the collaboration of elected officials and public safety partners.

Travel advisories are most often issued during winter weather events, but can also be used during floods, severe thunderstorms, civil unrest, or hazardous material releases.

Burn Bans

A burn ban can be issued by the County Commissioners at the recommendation of an EMA or it may be issued by the fire chief of their jurisdiction. Burn bans are considered a formal State of Emergency and should only be issued when climate and weather conditions present extreme danger of fires rapidly spreading out of control. Drought, low humidity, high winds, and dry vegetation are factors to be considered.
