Event Summary:
On March 30th, 2025, an EF1 tornado hit portions of West Township, causing damage to Marian University's Ancilla College and a number of residences. A few days later, on April 2nd, another EF1 tornado struck Marshall County. This tornado was on the ground from near SR 17 east of Culver all the way into Kosciusko County, causing significant damage to Bourbon. Thankfully, no lives were lost, but the property impact was substantial. EMA personnel conducted preliminary damage assessments and found around 70 homes or businesses impacted.
Disaster Declaration:
Following the second tornado, the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) was activated. Within hours, the County Commissioners had signed a local disaster declaration for Marshall County. On April 15th, Governor Mike Braun declared a statewide disaster, which began the process of seeking federal assistance. The Federal Disaster Declaration was approved by FEMA and President Trump on July 22, allowing Public Assistance (PA) money to be given to eligible government applicants. Marshall County and the Town of Bourbon are both in the process of receiving federal aid.
Indiana's request for Individual Assistance (IA), or funding that helps residents directly, was denied by the federal government. EMA submitted an appeal to that ruling and a final decision has not been made.
