About the Weights and Measures Section
The Weights and Measures Section plays an important role in commerce regulation by ensuring consumer goods are weighed and measured correctly. Inspectors ensure accuracy by testing a variety of weighing and measuring devices, including gas pumps, propane meters and scales used in grocery stores, grain elevators and pawn shops. The Weights and Measures Section is a neutral third party that looks out for both buyers and sellers, making every marketplace transaction fair and equitable.
Indiana Code 24-6 sets the standards for the state weights and measures program, which adheres to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) standards.

Services and Resources
The section protects the generic public by:
- Protecting against false weights and measures
- Gas pump meter testing
- Being an independent third party to guard both sides of commercial transactions
- Certifying scales that meet NIST standards
- Training county inspectors to NIST and NVLAP Accreditation standards
- Monitoring service companies for large scales
- Safeguarding octane rating of retail gasoline
- Inspecting for water in fuel
- Scale testing grain elevators, livestock sale and other businesses using scales
- Certifying pharmacy scales
- Inspecting tanks for bulk water, agricultural chemicals and fuel
- Certifying IHSAA wrestling scales, WIC baby scales and state institution scales
The section supports counties with populations below 30,000 (39 counties) that do not have a weights and measures program in the following ways:
- Weights and measures
- Motor fuel inspections
- Metrology laboratory
- Sanitary bedding
- All state weights and measures policy management and enforcement
For counties with populations above 30,000:
- County inspector training and approval
- Special support requests (testing new equipment, assisting county when needed)
Sanitary Bedding
The Weights and Measures Section performs inspections of bedding at all retail stores. The intent of the sanitary bedding program is to minimize the health risk associated with unsanitized bedding, and to ensure that consumers are informed as to the contents of bedding materials that may cause allergic reactions.
Effective July 1, 1995, Indiana stopped collecting all fees for bedding licenses and sterilization permits under Indiana Code 16-41-32-21 and Indiana Code 16-41-32-22. Indiana no longer issues registry numbers or bedding licenses.
New companies are required to apply for a sterilization or disinfection permit. There is no fee, and the permit does not require renewal.
