MONROE COUNTY JUROR FAQ’S
What are the requirements to qualify for jury service?
To qualify for jury service in Monroe County, you must be:
- At least 18 years of age,
- A United States citizen,
- A resident of Monroe County,
- Able to read, speak, and understand the English language.
- You must not have a physical or mental disability that would prevent you from performing your duties as a juror in a satisfactory manner,
- You must not be under a guardianship appointment due to mental incapacity,
- You must not have had your right to vote revoked by reason of a felony conviction and have not had your rights to vote restored.
- If you are a law enforcement officer, you are ineligible for service on a criminal jury trial. You may serve on a civil jury trial.
- In Indiana, prospective jurors are selected at random from a jury pool compiled by the State of Indiana using information from the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, Indiana Department of Revenue, and local taxes.

How long does a juror have to serve?
- If you receive notice of jury service, you are required to be available for a period of one month.
- You may or may not be selected for a jury panel during your month of eligibility.
- If you are not selected for a jury panel during your month of eligibility, your jury service has not concluded, and you will remain eligible for selection in the future.
- If you are selected for a jury panel during your month of eligibility, you will only be selected for one panel. You may or may not be seated as a juror after jury selection. At the conclusion of your service, regardless of whether you are seated as a juror, you will not be eligible for jury service for another two (2) years.
- Court is typically in session from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, with a recess for lunch. Hours are subject to vary by Court. Most jury trials are completed within 2-5 days.
What is the difference between being eligible for jury service and serving as a juror?
Eligible for Jury Service:
- If you receive a letter indicating you are eligible for jury service, you are on call for the period of one month. You will be required to phone the jury notification line each evening (812) 349-JURY (5879), to see if you have been selected to appear on a jury panel, unless you have elected to receive text or e-mail notifications.
- If you opted to receive text or e-mail notifications on your jury questionnaire, you will ONLY receive text or e-mail notification if you have been selected for a jury panel. Please follow the instructions indicated in those messages. It is still recommended that you call the jury notification line on Sunday evenings to receive updated information from the Jury Coordinator.
Serving as a Juror:
- If your juror number is listed on the jury notification line or you have received a text or e-mail notification, you have been randomly selected to appear on a jury panel.
- You will report to the Justice Building, located at 301 N. College Avenue, Bloomington, IN 47404, at the time you were provided by the message line OR as listed in the text message/email you received.
- You should report to the assigned Courtroom as directed by building staff. The Jury Coordinator will provide you with additional information regarding your day. - After check-in, a process known as voir dire will begin. During voir dire, the attorneys will ask you questions relevant to the case at hand. After you have been questioned, you will either be selected as a seated juror or excused. If you are selected, you and the other seated jurors will receive further instructions from the Judge. If you are not selected, your service time has been completed for the month, and you will not be eligible for further jury service for another two (2) years.
Can I schedule appointments or take a vacation during my month of service?
If you receive notice of jury service, you are required to be available for a period of one month.
- Once you have received notice of eligibility for jury service, please refrain from scheduling any new appointments or vacations during your month of service.
- All previously scheduled medical appointments and vacations should be written on your jury questionnaire when it is submitted to the Court to allow those days to be considered for approved excusal during your month of service.
- If any changes in your availability should occur during your selected month, you must notify the Jury Coordinator at (812) 349-2616, as soon as possible, to be considered for excusal.
Am I paid for being a juror? How much?
Yes, the payment amount is set pursuant to State statute.
- If you are selected to report for a jury panel and are not seated as a juror, you will be paid $30.00, plus mileage.
- If you are selected to report for a jury panel and are seated as a juror, you will be paid $80.00 per day, plus mileage.
Does the Court provide meals for jurors?
- Meals are not regularly provided by the Court, except during times of deliberation. Jurors will be provided a lunch break and are allowed to bring their own meals, snacks, and drinks.
Are there exemptions from jury service?
You may request exemption from jury service for the following circumstances:
- You are 75 years of age or older
- You have a medical excuse (A doctor’s statement is required)
- You are Active Military.
- Law enforcement officers are exempt from serving in criminal jury trials. They can serve in civil trials.
The following circumstances are not eligible exemptions for jury duty under Indiana statute:
- Normal work obligations
- Childcare
- Transportation
What are the different types of jury trials?
- Criminal Jury Trial: A case in which the State of Indiana (Prosecutor) alleges the Defendant (accused) committed a criminal offense.
- Civil: A suit designed to enforce a right or gain repayment for a wrong done to a person or party by another person or party. These cases generally involve money damages.
Where do I park if I’m Required to report for jury service?
- A letter containing relevant jury information, including where you should park, will be mailed to you around two weeks prior to your month of jury service.
