Bicycle Safety Tips
Bicycling is a fun, healthy, and great family activity. During the summer months, more people are biking through Clermont, particularly children. The town encourages all residents to do their part to help keep our bicyclists safe.
- Parents and Children
Parents, please educate your children on these key safety practices:
- Always wear a properly fitted helmet.
- Check your bike’s tires, brakes, and fit before riding.
- Be visible. Wear bright colors, reflective materials, and lights on your bicycle so you can see and be seen.
- On the road, ride in the same direction as traffic.
- Obey traffic signs, signals, and lane markings.
- Be predictable. Ride in a straight line and use hand signals when changing lanes or turning.
- Stay focused. Look ahead for traffic and obstacles. Do not use electronic devices while riding.
- Children younger than 10 are safer riding away from traffic and may ride on the sidewalk, but should use extra caution at driveways and intersections.
- Drivers
Drivers, take these simple precautions to put safety first:
- Slow down. Follow the speed limits and use extra caution when traveling through intersections.
- Look for bicyclists and pedestrians when turning or pulling out from a parking spot.
- Be patient if you are traveling behind a cyclist. Give plenty of space when passing.
- Yield to bicyclists just as you would to another vehicle, and be careful not to underestimate their speed. This will help avoid turning in front of a bicycle and causing a collision.
- Never drive distracted or impaired.
