Public and Semi-Public Pools

Porter County Health Department permits and inspects all public and semi-public pool facilities in Porter County. There are approximately 70 facilities with a combined total of 100 pools and spas that are inspected annually. These facilities include hotels, apartment complexes, schools, mobile home parks, tourist homes, waterparks, and campgrounds.

The Indiana Department of Homeland Security's Division of Fire and Building Safety reviews and approves plans for the construction of new and major remodels of existing public swimming pools

Public and Semi-Public Pool Permits

Public/Semi-Public Pool applications for the following year, are distributed in October to existing facilities and are due back to the Porter County Health Department by December 31st along with the appropriate fee. Public pools are permitted either as a partial year pool or a full year pool. A partial-year pool facility is open from May to September and is charged a $25 per pool fee. A full-year pool facility is open longer than May to September and is charged a $50 per pool fee. Any applications received after December 31st will be charged a $10 late fee per pool. Public pool facilities are also required to have an employee on staff that has passed the National Swimming Pool Foundation's Certified Pool Operator (CPO) class. Any employee that adds chemicals and maintains the pool should be CPO certified. A copy of the employee's CPO certificate is required in addition to the permit application and fee.
