The Lead Inspector and Lead Risk Assessor are responsible for identifying and mitigating lead-base paint hazards in homes and facilities throughout Grant County, Indiana. These roles are critical in protecting children and families from the long-term health effects of lead exposure.

  1. Lead Inspector
  • Conduct visual assessments of residential and commercial properties for potential lead-based paint hazards.
  • Collect paint, dust, soil and water samples for laboratory analysis.
  • Use XRF Analyzers (X-Ray Fluorescence) to detect lead-based paint.
  • Document findings in compliance with EPA, HUD, and Indiana State Regulations.
  • Provide detailed reports to property owners, landlords, tenants and local officials.

2. Lead Risk Assessor

  • Perform comprehensive risk assessments to evaluate the severity and source of lead hazards.
  • Interpret lab results and environmental data to determine exposure pathways.
  • Develop lead hazard control plans outlining necessary abatement or interim control methods.
  • educate families and property owners about lead-safe practices and preventive measures.
  • Follow up on abatement projects to verify that lead hazards have been properly addressed.
  • Supports Grant County Code Enforcement and Public Health Investigations by addressing substandard housing conditions.
  • Works with HUD programs, local housing authorities and contractors to ensure safe housing during renovations or demolitions.
  • Collaborates with WIC, Pediatricians and Schools to identify at-risk children with elevated blood lead levels.
  • Prevents childhood lead poisoning, a serious environmental health threat that can lead to developmental delays, behavioral issues, and lifelong health consequences.
  • Improves overall indoor environmental quality, especially in low-income housing and older buildings.
  • promotes equity in health and housing, ensuring all residents of Grant County have access to safe living conditions.
  • Acts as a frontline defender against environmental hazards, aligning with the department's mission of protecting and improving community health.

    • Housing and Urband Development (HUD) Guidelines
