Overview, Participation, and Scheduling

Indiana’s Alternate Measure (I AM) measures student achievement and growth according to Indiana’s Content Connectors aligned to the Indiana Academic Standards. I AM is the summative accountability assessment for students with significant cognitive disabilities in grades 3-8 and high school. It assesses English/Language Arts (Grades 3-8 and 10), Mathematics (Grades 3-8 and 10), Science (Grades 4, 6, and Biology), and Social Studies (Grade 5).

A Case Conference Committee may determine that I AM is the most appropriate assessment utilizing the criteria for determining eligibility to participate. More information regarding participation in the alternate assessment can be found below.

For more information about ESSA’s 1% cap on participation in the alternate assessment, please visit the Alternate Assessment ESSA 1% Cap page here .

I AM is administered once each year. The next administration of I AM is April 4, 2022 through May, 13, 2022.

Test Design

I AM is a stage-adaptive test for all content areas. A stage-adaptive test means the assessment will be delivered in two parts. In Part 1, all students take the same test form consisting of items from a range of complexities. Performance on Part 1 determines placement into one of the three tiered forms for Part 2. Each tiered form contains a mixture of items from adjacent levels. Performance on items from both parts are combined for the final summative student score.

Sample Items, Scoring, and Reporting Resources

The Office of Student Assessment (OSA) releases several items per grade and content area each year from Indiana’s Alternate Measure (I AM) assessments. Released items are provided in Cambium Assessment, Inc.’s (CAI) sample test delivery system and can be used as sample assessments to familiarize students with test content and format.

Included in the Released Items Repository are sample items for each grade level, content area and tier and designated supports and accommodations (may be applied at will on any assessment by any user).
