How to Convert your Charter School License to a full Professional Educator’s License

Senate enrolled Act 204 (2026) amends Indiana Code (IC) 20-28-5-16 to provide a pathway for holders of instructional Charter School Licenses to convert their license to a Professional Educator License. Professional Educator Licenses are not limited to teaching in charter schools and are valid for teaching in any Indiana school.

A charter school license holder may be issued a Professional Educator License based on:

  1.  Two consecutive years as an effective teacher in the area being taught, as determined by the evaluation of the charter school administrator;
  2. Passage of the licensing content test(s) in the area(s) taught;
  3. Completion of other required trainings (CPR, suicide prevention, human trafficking, and child abuse and neglect recognition and reporting); and
  4. The proficiency of the Professional Educator License will be equal to the proficiency of the charter school license (initial practitioner level or higher).

If you have not yet taken the required Praxis content exam(s), please visit Praxis’ page for Indiana and view the tests required for your content area(s). If you have more than one content area on your charter school license, you must pass the test for each content area.
