The Indiana Safe Haven Law enables a person to surrender an infant anonymously without fear of arrest or prosecution. The Safe Haven Law allows a parent to walk into any fire station, police station or hospital in the state of Indiana with a newborn 60 days or younger and surrender that child. A parent can also anonymously call 911 for an emergency medical service provider to come take the child into their care.
As long as there are no signs of intentional abuse on the baby, no information is required of the person leaving the baby. Any knowledge of the date of birth, race, parent medical history, child's health or anything that would be useful to the child's caregiver would be greatly appreciated.
Once the baby is examined and given medical treatment (if needed), the Indiana Department of Child Services will take the baby into custody through Child Protective Services or a Licensed Child Placing Agency (LCPA) where it will be placed with a caregiver.
A parent can call 911 for an emergency medical services provider to come to them to take custody of the child under Safe Haven. Even when calling 911, can still remain anonymous.
