Weights & Measures

The Floyd County Weights & Measures Department is responsible for the oversight of commercial transactions involving the weighing of commodities and the accurate weights and proper weighing practices on behalf of the buyer and the seller. The buyer has a right to equity and the seller has a right to fair value. Businesses that produce, transport, or purchase products and materials depend on accurate measurements of the weights of those products. The Weights and Measures Department performs unannounced inspections to verify accuracy and fairness throughout Floyd County.

Weights and Measures verify the accuracy of fuel dispensing devices, including gasoline and diesel pumps and fuel delivery vehicles. Weights and Measures also verify all scales used in commercial transactions, including scales at recycling facilities, pharmacies, delis, meat and produce departments, and checkout counters.

The Department regularly performs unannounced inspections to verify accuracy and fairness throughout Floyd County. Devices that pass inspection receive an approval sticker that is valid for one year from the date of inspection.

Gasoline & Diesel Pumps

Weights and Measures Measuring EquipmentGasoline and Diesel pumps are tested at least annually. They are tested for price verification, volume delivery accuracy, and total cost. If a question arises about the accuracy of a particular pump, it will be retested. If a pump is replaced, repaired or new pumps are installed they will be tested within 30 days.

Volume tests are conducted by dispensing five (5) gallons of fuel into a test container that has been certified by the Indiana State Department of Weights and Measures. One gallon of fuel equals 231 cubic inches. The amount of variance allowed is 6 cubic inches per 5 gallons or ½ of 1%.

If a pump is out of tolerance it is rejected and must be repaired to within 3 cubic inches per 5 gallons.

Commercial Scales

Commercial scales are weighing and measuring devices used or employed in establishing the size, quantity, extent, area, or measurement of quantities, things, produce, or articles for distribution or consumption, purchased, offered, or submitted for sale, hire, or in computing any basic charge or payment for services rendered on the basis of weight or measure. These include scales at recycling facilities, pharmacies, delis, meat and produce departments, and checkout counters.

Commercial scales are checked at least annually. They are checked for weighing accuracy as well as computation of pricing.
