Building Commissioner

Building CommissionerPermits are required for many updates to your property/structures including: new construction, any new structure being placed on your property, fences, or alterations to the interior or exterior of a structure. All Electrical work must be permitted and is not included in a building permit. Garage Sales inside City limits also require a permit.

PERMITS: All applications can be completed online on the permitting portal.(https://countyofcassin.portal.opengov.com) Only the legal deeded owner or Registered Contractor/Electrician can apply for a permit. If you are not the legal deeded owner of your property you will need to print and complete a Consent of Owner document or provide a purchase agreement containing signatures of all involved parties to upload to your application.

What requires a permit? Permits are required for many updates and or changes to your property/structures including: new construction, demolition, any new structure being placed on your property, fences, or alterations to the interior or exterior of a structure. Any changes to a property that would change the way it is used will require a Change of Use permit such as adding or removing additional units to a structure, opening a new business, changing a commercial property to a residential property etc. All Electrical work must also be permitted and cannot be included in a building permit.

Garage Sales located inside City limits also require a permit.

Contractors - Any Contractor working in the City of Logansport must register with the Building Department. The registration application is completed online at the permitting portal and is located at the bottom of the page. Registration runs from the date of application to the expiration date of your liability insurance.

Requirements include

  • A Certificate of Liability with at least $500,000 in coverage
  • Workers compensation insurance is required for any contractor who has employees
  • The certificate holder box on the certificate of insurance must contain the following: City of Logansport 601 E Broadway Ste. 303 Logansport, IN 46947.

Electricians: Any Electrician working in the City of Logansport must hold a License with the Building Department. Any Electrician wishing to obtain a Logansport Electrical License is required to pass an Electrical Exam taken in the Building Department office and must have at least 5 years’ experience. If you would like to apply to take the test you will need to complete an Application to Test on the permitting portal (https://countyofcassin.portal.opengov.com). An Electrical License runs from the date of application to the expiration date of the liability insurance.

Electrical Licensing Requirements

  • Assigned License number from the Building Department
  • A $5,000 surety bond in the name of the licensed Electrician and listing the City of Logansport as the obligee.
  • A Certificate of Liability with at least $500,000 of commercial liability AND the following in the certificate holder box: City of Logansport 601 E Broadway Ste. 303 Logansport, IN 46947

  • What are the requirements for a City of Logansport Contractors Registration?

    All Contractors must provide:

    • proof of at least $500,000 in liability coverage with a Certificate of Liability listing the City of Logansport as the Certificate Holder. A $35 yearly fee is collected and registration runs from January 1- December 31.

    Electricians must test for their initial Licensing and have additional requirements.

  • Do I have to be registered in the City to do any work?

    You must be a Registered Contractor with the City of Logansport to perform any work on properties you do not live in/own.

    To register or renew you will need to:

      • Complete a Contractors Registration Application Logansport Contractors
      • Registration fee is $35.00 per calendar year.  Online payments, Cash, or Checks made payable to the City of Logansport are accepted.
      • Provide a Certificate of Liability Insurance listing the City of Logansport as the Certificate Holder

    Electricians must be a licensed Electrician with the City of Logansport please call our office for more information.

  • Where are my property lines?

    The City does not survey property lines. We recommend contacting a local surveyor to locate and identify property lines.

  • What are the requirements for placing a shed on my property?

    A “ILP” Building Permit is required in order to conform zoning setbacks and lot coverage. This permit takes 48 hours for approval.

  • Do I need a permit to install a fence?

    Yes, you do need a permit. You will need to provide the height, dimensions, and area where the fence will be located. It will take 48 hours for approval.
