The City of Alexandria is announcing the closure of the City Recycling Center, effective December 30, 2025.
The recycling center was originally created with a grant secured by a previous administration. Although that grant expired several years ago, the City continued to fund the program in an effort to keep the drop-off service available as long as possible.
Today, rising costs across all utility departments have made it financially unsustainable to continue operating a program that runs at a significant deficit. In addition, usage data shows that the drop-off center is used primarily by individuals who live outside city limits, meaning Alexandria residents are subsidizing a service that largely benefits non-residents.
City residents will still have full access to recycling through their existing curbside service provided by Best Way Disposal, which can be included as part of their trash service for a minimal fee. The curbside program is the City’s long-term recycling solution and remains available to every household within the city.
The City did not make this decision lightly, and we recognize that many residents value recycling. We encourage all households to continue to recycle through Best Way’s curbside program and to contact the Alexandria Utility Office with any questions about accepted materials or pickup schedules.
