NIRPC to hold public comment period on an Amendment to the 2022-2026 & 2024-2028 Transportation Improvement Programs

The Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission (NIRPC) will hold a 21-day public comment period on an amendment to the 2022-2026 and 2024-2028 Transportation Improvement Programs (TIPs). The comment period begins September 8, 2023 and will end on September 29, 2023. Amendment #24-01 contains:

  • Two new projects for INDOT.
  • New projects for the municipalities of East Chicago, Hammnd, La Porte, Michigan City, and Portage and the counties of Lake, La Porte and Porter.
  • Substantial changes in funding for projects in Gary, Michigan City, and Valparaiso.

NIRPC’s TIP is a short-range financial and spending plan for the utilization of federal transportation funding and for regionally significant projects. These federal funds can be used for highway, transit, and non-motorized transportation projects. NIRPC’s TIP includes projects undertaken by municipalities, counties, transit operators, and the State of Indiana. Federal planning regulations guide the preparation and development of the TIP documents.

Comments may be submitted until September 29, 2023, in the following ways:

  • Email: comments@nirpc.org
  • Phone: 219-763-6060
  • United States Postal Service: NIRPC, 6100 Southport Road, Portage, IN 46368

It is anticipated that action will be taken at the October 3, 2023 meeting of the Technical Planning Committee, followed by the October 19, 2023 meeting of the NIRPC Commission.
