INDIANA CASE LAW THAT ALL COPS NEED TO KNOW
$225 PER STUDENT | 1 DAY SEMINAR | 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM
INSTRUCTED BY: MIKE BRAZIL
The days of police officers relying on “what we’ve heard” and leaning on “we’ve always done it that way” are over! Police officers must know what the courts have deemed acceptable procedure in order to perform their duties in a constitutionally compliant manner in today’s modern policing. Having an in-depth knowledge of case law will lay the foundation to empower all police officers to perform their jobs confidently and legally. Throughout this course intended for Indiana police officers, Instructor Mike Brazil will examine, review, and explain significant U.S. Supreme Court and Indiana State Specific Case Law that is relevant to search and seizure. The goal of this course is to demonstrate how this case law can affect how police officers must perform their duties. Brazil will teach students how to avoid evidence exclusion, increase convictions, and reduce civil liability, and he will share his own personal experiences of actively applying case law to his policing.

Recruiting & Retaining the Next Generation of Law Enforcement Millennials, Media and Cultural Solutions
Presented by Calibre Press
In a climate of clashing media narratives, how do you cut through the noise and sell your culture & profession? How do you get facts out there, mend community relations, and flourish as an agency? Law enforcement is in desperate need of taking back the agenda-driven narrative that dishonors the profession and disparages its members.
We will open this two-day symposium by challenging law enforcement managers to think critically about solutions. Our instructor will offer data, stats and relevant studies that highlight what we're doing right and what we're doing wrong as leaders of both an organization and community. We then begin the discussion on 1) how to successfully attract and recruit qualified applicants - including members of the minority community and 2) how to retain your experienced officers in today's climate.
This course will address recruitment as the selling of a lifestyle rather than just a job. We will discuss the need for cultural changes that will help retain exceptional officers and how those same officers will become your greatest recruitment tool.
We will facilitate breakout sessions and conduct an open panel discussion, allowing participants the opportunity to weigh in with the instructors on the issues at hand. Course topics will include:
* Why do we have recruitment issues & officers retiring early?
* Countering the media and extremists: who's controlling the conversation?
* The Millennial Myth & Practical Solutions
* How should we be hiring? What are we looking for?
* Policy considerations: Are policies disqualifying strong candidates?
* Successful systems to identify inappropriate candidates
* Selling the lifestyle - Not just a job

Law enforcement officers hold a position of visible authority within their communities and are held to a tremendously high standard of honesty, integrity, fairness, and professionalism. Likewise, law enforcement leaders are directly responsible for maintaining the public trust and implementing policies, practices and a culture that are open to the public and address allegations of misconduct levied against its officers. Utilizing videos, lecture, case studies and interactive scenarios, professional policies, standards, and practices will describe a framework for accepting complaints, conducting internal investigations of its officers and appropriately dealing with officers who have breached high ethical standards. The course will also address innovative and proactive steps that law enforcement leaders should consider as they foster a culture that respects the community it serves. This course is designed to alert law enforcement leaders, and those responsible for conducting those investigations, to the legal implications that can result from improperly conducted investigations or a department’s failure to address alleged misconduct by its officers (supervisor and investigator liability). Instructors will reinforce police-involved shooting and in-custody death investigation and the impact of body-worn cameras on citizen complaints, along with many other current topics.
