Native American Indian Affairs Subcommittee
The Native American Indian Affairs Subcommittee works to identify, study, and address issues affecting Native American Indian communities across Indiana. As a statutory subcommittee of the Indiana Cultural Commission, the group supports statewide engagement, cultural preservation, collaboration, and recommendations related to education, access to services, community development, and historical awareness.
The subcommittee continues the work previously carried out by the Indiana Commission on Native American Indian Affairs and helps ensure that Native American Indian communities continue to have representation and a dedicated voice within the Indiana Cultural Commission.

About the Subcommittee
The Native American Indian Affairs Subcommittee was established under HEA 1003 as one of four statutory subcommittees within the Indiana Cultural Commission. The subcommittee supports outreach, engagement, education, and recommendations related to issues affecting Native American Indian communities throughout Indiana.
The subcommittee works collaboratively with commissioners, tribal representatives, community organizations, educators, cultural leaders, and residents to strengthen cultural understanding, support preservation efforts, and encourage meaningful community engagement across the state.
Subcommittee Responsibilities
Under Indiana law, the Native American Indian Affairs Subcommittee is required to meet at least two times each year and provide an annual report to the full Indiana Cultural Commission.
Responsibilities of the subcommittee may include:
- Reviewing issues affecting Native American Indian communities
- Supporting outreach and cultural engagement initiatives
- Identifying barriers impacting opportunity and access
- Developing recommendations for the Commission
- Encouraging statewide collaboration and awareness
