Black Hoosier Affairs Subcommittee
The Black Hoosier Affairs Subcommittee was established under HEA 1003 as one of four statutory subcommittees within the Indiana Cultural Commission. The subcommittee is responsible for supporting discussions, outreach, and recommendations related to issues affecting Black Hoosiers throughout Indiana.
The subcommittee works collaboratively with commissioners, community organizations, state leaders, and residents to promote cultural understanding, strengthen community engagement, and support initiatives that improve opportunity and access across Indiana.

About the Subcommittee
The Black Hoosier Affairs Subcommittee was established under HEA 1003 as one of four statutory subcommittees within the Indiana Cultural Commission. Subcommittee Responsibilities
Under Indiana law, the Black Hoosier Affairs Subcommittee is required to meet at least two times each year and provide an annual report to the full Indiana Cultural Commission.
Responsibilities of the subcommittee may include:
- Reviewing issues affecting Black communities
- Supporting community outreach and engagement
- Identifying barriers impacting opportunity and access
- Developing recommendations for the Commission
- Encouraging statewide collaboration and awareness
- Participating in educational and cultural initiatives
Focus Areas
The Black Hoosier Affairs Subcommittee may review and discuss a variety of issues affecting Black communities across Indiana, including:
Economic & Business Development
Encouraging economic growth, entrepreneurship, and workforce opportunity.
Civil Rights
Promoting awareness and understanding of civil rights issues impacting Black Hoosiers.
Community Engagement
Strengthening partnerships, outreach efforts, and community collaboration statewide.
Education
Supporting educational opportunity, awareness, and access.
Housing
Supporting discussions related to housing access and community stability.
Health & Wellness
Identifying issues related to healthcare access, wellness, and community health outcomes.

The Black Hoosier Affairs Subcommittee continues and expands upon the work previously led by the Indiana Commission on the Social Status of Black Males. Through the unified structure of the Indiana Cultural Commission, the subcommittee helps ensure continued representation, engagement, and statewide collaboration focused on issues impacting Black Hoosiers.
