Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health (AIM)

About AIMIndiana AIM Logo

AIM is an initiative led by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), in partnership with over 30 additional professional organizations, including the American College of Nurse Midwives (ACNM), the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN), the Society for Maternal and Fetal Medicine (SMFM) and more.

The purpose of AIM is to promote consistent and safe maternity care to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality by equipping, empowering, and emboldening every state’s maternal health leaders, providers, and systems by implementing patient safety bundles.

Safety Bundles

These safety bundles are short, straightforward evidence-based action steps that hospital obstetric and women’s health units can implement to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality The improvement work is done by evaluating current practices within each obstetric unit and improving upon any recognized deficits by adopting the national best practices outlined in the bundle.

AIM has patient safety bundles to reduce the most common maternal morbidities and causes of death.

The Core Patient Safety Bundles are the main foundation in the AIM program focused on addressing the leading identified causes of preventable severe maternal morbidity and mortality in the US. These bundles include:

Indiana AIM

In January 2019, Indiana joined AIM and launched the program later that June. The first bundle that was implemented was Obstetric Hemorrhage. the Indiana hospital Association has partnered with the Indiana Department Division of Maternal and Child Health to provide data and support as necessary. This program is completely free and voluntary for Indiana hospitals.

Since launching in June 2019, IDOH received an overwhelming response from Indiana hospitals that were ready to implement proven and effective practice guidelines to improve the health outcomes of their patients. While participation in Indiana AIM is voluntary for Indiana hospitals, IDOH and the State Health Commissioner continue to call on all delivering facilities in the state to join. As of September 2022, 82 of Indiana’s 84 delivering facilities have been enrolled in AIM.
