Maternal Mental Health

Maternal mental health (MMH) issues are the most common complication of pregnancy and childbirth, affecting approximately 1 in 5 women and 1 in 10 men during pregnancy or the first year after being pregnant. 75% of women experiencing maternal mental health challenges do not get the care needed for recovery. However, maternal mental health challenges are temporary and treatable. With proper care, you can fully recover.

MMH conditions include:

  • depression,
  • anxiety disorders,
  • obsessive-compulsive disorder,
  • post-traumatic stress disorder,
  • bipolar illness (which may include psychotic symptoms), and
  • substance use disorders.

Read more about each condition, learn the signs and symptoms, and find help near you.

To alleviate the strain on the existing mental health system while simultaneously providing needed care to postpartum patients, IDOH has created a modified version of the Stepped Care Model to be a part of the Postpartum Discharge Transition bundle implementation. The Stepped Care Model is an approach that has been used around the world but has been used most often to provide mental health services to college students. In this model, Maternal Health Advocates (MHAs) assist with the first line of care for screening and providing mental health support, resources, and services. Then, if the mental health condition increases either in severity, duration, or impact, the patient is moved up the line of care to receive more specialized care if needed.
