The Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) is excited to share resources with educators that provide transparency regarding the statewide grade 3 reading assessment. The Indiana Reading Evaluation and Determination (IREAD-3) was developed by Indiana educators to measure foundational reading skills of students at the end of their grade 3 school year. IREAD-3 will be provided through the Cambium Assessment, Inc. (CAI). Visit the Indiana Assessment Portal to access more information about technology requirements and the online testing platform.
Test Design
The Indiana Reading Evaluation and Determination (IREAD-3) is designed to measure basic reading skills and reading comprehension based on Indiana Academic Standards. Test design is centered on understanding these standards, collaborating with Indiana Educators to define content priorities and evidences of mastery, and creating key documents that define the assessment. These key documents are explained and provided below.
Blueprints
Blueprints define the essential content which will be measured by the assessment. Indiana educator committees in collaboration with content experts created the blueprints for IREAD-3. The resources below explain how to understand and use the IREAD-3 blueprints to support instruction.
Item Specifications
Item Specifications define exactly how each standard will be measured. These documents are used by professional item writers to create items and include information such as evidence statements, Depth of Knowledge requirements, and sample items.
Sample Items and Scoring
Item Sampler
The Item Sampler provides practice questions similar to what students see on Indiana Reading Evaluation and Determination (IREAD-3). These sample items are also available in the Released Items Repository.
Performance Level Descriptors
IREAD-3 requires a passing score of 446 or greater.
- IREAD-3 Cut Score and Performance Level Descriptors (PLDs) define what students know and can do within different proficiency levels.
Interpreting and Using IREAD-3 Data
- Student reports are generated after the students complete their assessment in a PDF form. View a mock-student report here.
- Use the IREAD-3 Individual Student Report (ISR) Interpretive Guide to assist in reading the mock-student report. Lexile score will be provided for those students who do not pass IREAD-3.
