Artist Needs Assessment, 2023-2024

Beginning in the Fall of 2023, the Indiana Arts Commission launched a statewide Artist Needs Assessment. The assessment consisted of two core components: (1) Eleven in-person facilitated listening sessions across Indiana with artists of a variety backgrounds and (2) a subsequent public survey based on listening session feedback disseminated statewide. On-Ramp Creative Entrepreneur Accelerator

The On-Ramp Creative Entrepreneur Accelerator program teaches entrepreneurship to artists and creative professionals during a three-day workshop that focuses on pursuing a portfolio career, followed by a one-year, $2,000 fellowship to put the learnings into practice. Since its start in 2018, On-Ramp has served 261 artists, and 255 pursued the subsequent fellowships. The following reports detail outcomes of the program:

Poet Laureate Program

In 2005, Indiana Senate Bill No. 433 established the role of Poet Laureate for the state of Indiana and outlined the process for selecting a Poet Laureate biennially. After more than 15 years of successful programming, the Indiana Arts Commission conducted research and a report of the Indiana Poet Laureate program and how to expand its impact in the years ahead.

How Indiana Municipalities Are Utilizing  Local Arts & Culture in Their Community  & Economic Development Strategies

The Indiana Arts Commission partnered with the Indiana Communities Institute from 2020-2022 to conduct a research study to better understand:

  • the extent to which communities view the arts as a way to achieve economic, community and tourism development goals;
  • the extent to which communities are currently working with the arts to pursue such goals;
  • the priorities for arts and culture-focused community development programming in communities without a robust arts and culture vision; and
  • the extent to which communities would be receptive to capacity-building and training to prepare them for this type of work.

Indiana Cultural Districts

An Indiana Cultural District is a well-recognized, labeled, mixed-use area with unique, authentic art and cultural identity. Each district is a statewide leader in cultural development. The following reports outline creative jobs, creative industry, and cultural nonprofit data within each of the designated cultural districts.

Creative Aging - Lifelong Arts Indiana

To evaluate the impact of the Lifelong Arts Indiana program, the Indiana Arts Commission engaged the University of Indianapolis Center for Aging & Community (UIndy CAC) to conduct a rigorous evaluation process resulting in some of the most robust research findings on creative aging programming in the country.
