The Town of Georgetown is committed to providing safe, reliable, and well-maintained streets and sidewalks for residents, businesses, and visitors. The Town's Public Works Department is responsible for the maintenance of all Town-owned streets, performing routine services such as crack sealing, pothole repairs, snow and ice removal, storm debris cleanup (including fallen trees and limbs), and cleaning and clearing roadway storm drains to help ensure proper drainage and safe travel throughout the community. Please note that State Road 64 is maintained by the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) and is not maintained by the Town of Georgetown. For larger roadway improvement projects, including asphalt resurfacing and reconstruction, the Town contracts with qualified construction companies to complete the work.
Since 2016, the Town has taken a proactive approach to preserving and improving its roadway infrastructure through the Indiana Department of Transportation's Community Crossings Matching Grant (CCMG) Program. By leveraging these grant funds alongside local investment, Georgetown has successfully repaved numerous streets throughout the community, helping extend the life of our transportation network while providing residents with safer, smoother roadways. This long-term investment strategy allows the Town to maximize taxpayer dollars while maintaining high-quality infrastructure.
Sidewalks are an important public asset that improve safety, accessibility, and connectivity throughout Georgetown. The Town requires all newly constructed subdivisions to include sidewalks within their developments, ensuring future neighborhoods are designed with walkability in mind. In addition, the Town has been expanding sidewalks along State Road 64 through a phased approach to better connect residents with key community destinations, including Georgetown Park, Downtown Georgetown, local businesses, and Georgetown Elementary School. Once all planned phases are complete, residents will be able to walk continuously from Georgetown Christian Church to Copperfield Commons. While the Town is responsible for maintaining the sidewalk infrastructure itself, property owners are responsible for routine maintenance, including removing snow and ice from the sidewalk located adjacent to their home or business to help keep these pathways safe and accessible for everyone.
