  • What does the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office do?

    The Prosecutor’s Office represents the State of Indiana in criminal prosecutions. We are responsible for filing and pursuing charges against individuals accused of crimes in Lake County. The office also works with law enforcement to investigate crimes, supports victims and witnesses, and manages specialized divisions including juvenile justice, felony investigations, domestic violence, child support enforcement, and community outreach.

  • How do I report a crime?

    If you are experiencing or witnessing an emergency, call 911 immediately. To report a non-emergency crime, contact your local police department. The Prosecutor’s Office does not take direct crime reports from the public

  • I received a subpoena—what should I do?

    A subpoena is a legal order requiring your appearance in court. If you have received a subpoena from the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office, please follow the instructions listed and contact our office at 219-755-3720 with any questions. Failure to comply may result in legal consequences.

  • How can I get information about my criminal case?

    Victims should contact the assigned Deputy Prosecutor or check the status of a case through mycase.in.gov. Victims or witnesses may contact our Victim/Witness Assistance Division for updates and support at 219-755-3720.

  • What services does the Victim/Witness Assistance Division offer?

    This division provides emotional support, court updates, referrals to counseling or shelter, help with applying for victim compensation, and accompaniment to court proceedings. Our goal is to ensure that victims are informed, heard, and supported throughout the legal process.

  • How do I apply for child support or enforce an existing order?

    The Child Support Division can help with establishing paternity, creating or modifying child support orders, and enforcing payment. To open a case or request services, contact 219-883-3333 or visit the Child Support Office 400 Broadway St. located Gary, Indiana.

  • Can I drop charges once they’ve been filed?

    Only the Prosecutor has the legal authority to dismiss charges. While a victim’s wishes are considered, once charges are filed by the State of Indiana, the case proceeds based on the facts, evidence, and public interest.

  • How can I participate in a diversion program?

    Diversion programs may be available for eligible first-time, non-violent offenders. These programs often involve education, community service, and supervision. Participation is determined by the Deputy Prosecutor and the court on a case-by-case basis.

  • Does the Prosecutor’s Office offer community programs?
