Juvenile Division

Brandy Darling

Juvenile Deputy Prosecutor

(219) 660-6999

The Juvenile Division of the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office is dedicated to addressing offenses committed by individuals under the age of 18 in a manner that emphasizes rehabilitation, accountability, and public safety. Operating in accordance with Indiana state law, the division focuses on guiding young offenders toward positive life choices while ensuring that the community is protected.

Under the leadership of Brandy Darling, the Juvenile Division handles a broad range of juvenile matters, including but not limited to:

  • Delinquency cases involving criminal offenses committed by minors
  • Status offenses such as truancy, curfew violations, and runaway behavior
  • Informal adjustments and diversion programs for eligible first-time or low-risk offenders
  • Waiver proceedings for cases involving serious or violent offenses where the minor may be transferred to adult court
  • School-based referrals and coordination with local school districts
  • Collaboration with probation, child services, and mental health providers to develop individualized rehabilitation plans

The division works closely with the Lake County Juvenile Court, Juvenile Probation, law enforcement, and community partners to ensure timely and appropriate responses to juvenile behavior. Whenever possible, the focus is placed on restorative practices, mental health support, education continuity, and reducing the likelihood of reoffending.

If your child is detained, the next step is a detention hearing.  This normally takes place within 48 business hours of your child’s arrest.  A probation officer will notify you of the time, date, and location of the hearing.
