Juvenile Division

The Lake County Prosecutor’s Office is committed to juvenile issues throughout the community. If your child is detained, the next step is a detention hearing. This normally takes place within 48 business hours of your child’s arrest. A probation officer will notify you of the time, date, and location of this hearing. Probation officers serve as a liaison between the school and the Juvenile Court.

The mission of the Lake County Department of Child Support Services is being committed to establishing paternity and attaining child support in order to motivate responsible parenting, family self-sufficiency and child well-being. The Lake County Department of Child Support assures that assistance in attaining support is available to children through locating parents, establishing paternity, establishing and modifying support obligations, and enforcing those obligations.

The Lake County Prosecutor’s Office

The Lake County Prosecutor’s Office represents the State of Indiana in all felony and misdemeanor criminal prosecutions resulting from crimes committed within Lake County. The primary function of the office is reviewing all case files submitted to the office by law enforcement and deciding whether criminal charges should be filed, and then prosecuting those cases.

The Lake County Prosecutor’s Office holds criminals accountable for their actions and works hard to preserve the rights of victims. It seeks to place public safety as the number one priority and responsibility of government. This office is dedicated to continually seeking justice and maintaining the highest ethical standards.

Lake County Prosecutor Bernard A. Carter has been the elected prosecutor for Lake County, Indiana for over 30 years. In 1990, Prosecutor Carter successfully ran for Judge of the Lake Superior Court, County Division III. He remained as Judge in that courtroom until 1993 when he was appointed Prosecuting Attorney of the 31st Judicial Circuit by Governor Evan Bayh.

In 1994, he was elected as Prosecuting Attorney and has since served in this position. As Prosecutor, he has secured convictions in four death penalty cases. Since his graduation from Valparaiso Law School in 1984, Prosecutor Carter has unwaveringly answered the siren call of criminal justice. His service to his profession and elected position has unwaveringly answered the siren call of criminal justice. Mission Statement

It is the mission of the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office to pursue justice within the bounds of the law by holding criminals accountable for their actions and to protect and preserve the rights of victims of crime. The Prosecutor serves the public interest with integrity and balanced judgment to promote greater public safety by vigorously prosecuting those who commit violent crime, child abuse, exploitation and neglect, drug dealing, firearms offenses, as well as repeat and habitual offenders without regard to race, religion, gender, political affiliation, or socio-economic status. The Prosecutor’s Office strives to maintain the highest level of integrity, ethics, and professionalism while treating all those that come into contact with the criminal justice system with dignity and respect.
