Nonemergency Medical Transportation

For Indiana Health Coverage Programs (IHCP) members who are served through the fee-for-service (FFS) delivery system, most nonemergency medical transportation (NEMT) services are brokered through Verida. Members with FFS coverage plus NEMT services brokered through Verida are identified as such during member eligibility verification through the IHCP Provider Healthcare Portal.

Note: NEMT services for members enrolled in the Healthy Indiana Plan, Hoosier Care Connect and Hoosier Healthwise managed care programs continue to be managed through the member's managed care entity's (MCE's) designated vendor.

In limited circumstances, FFS NEMT services are exempt from the brokerage requirement and can be arranged directly with the transportation provider. Providers should refer to the Transportation Services provider reference module for more information.

In addition, a temporary limited exemption exists for transportation arranged by designated types of facilities for their residents.

NEMT providers rendering brokered transportation services - including common carriers (ambulatory and nonambulatory), taxis, bus services and ambulance services - must be enrolled as IHCP providers. Additionally, providers need to contract with Verida to be a part of their statewide NEMT network.

See the following resources for more information about Verida policies and procedures, including how to contract with Verida as a transportation provider, how to arrange for transportation through Verida, and how to bill Verida for services rendered:
