INDIANAPOLIS – At today’s Indiana State Board of Education (SBOE) meeting, the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) presented a framework of the Indiana Graduates Prepared to Succeed (GPS) characteristics, a set of knowledge and skills that contribute most significantly to a student’s lifelong success. This was accompanied by a presentation of the framework for an aligned school performance dashboard, with the goal of offering a comprehensive view of school and student performance.

“We know that our students are so much more than just a single data point,” said Dr. Katie Jenner, Indiana Secretary of Education. “That’s why as we look ahead to the best system for measuring school and student performance, we must provide a more holistic, intentional approach. Empowered by this framework and dashboard, we have an opportunity to re-envision how educational progress is measured, tailor learning for individual students, and strengthen how we provide information regarding our schools’ educational programs and results.”

As directed by House Enrolled Act 1514, IDOE and the SBOE are tasked with developing a dashboard that promotes transparency and multiple student measures, including longitudinal measures. As part of the framework for the Indiana GPS and the performance dashboard’s development, IDOE is working with educators, parents and community leaders to determine the most important characteristics contributing to a student’s lifelong success. Multiple data points or indicators would then reflect progress toward these characteristics on the dashboard.

As part of developing this new system, IDOE plans to continue engaging stakeholders in order to finalize the Indiana GPS characteristics this fall. IDOE then plans to present indicators of these characteristics, based on public feedback, to the SBOE for approval in December. Members of the public can provide their feedback on the development of the Indiana GPS characteristics here.

“Whether you’re a parent, educator, community member, employer, or a student, our mission is to build a single dashboard that empowers you with the information needed to gain a comprehensive view of your school’s programs and performance. We have a massive task ahead of us, yet working together we can provide an increasingly transparent picture of student and school performance,” said Jenner.
