Business Registration Information

All businesses operating within the Town of Porter must register with the Town and renew their registration each calendar year.

  • Annual Term: January 1 – December 31
  • Initial Filing: Within 30 days of starting business activity
  • Renewal Deadline: January 31 of each year

Fee & Certificate

  • $40 annual registration fee
  • A Business License Certificate is issued for display at your business location.
  • If you would like your certificate mailed, please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope with your registration.

Late Renewal & Penalty

Registrations not renewed by January 31 are subject to a $75 citation and fine for code violation.

Purpose

Registration helps protect the public health, safety, and welfare by ensuring the Town’s police and fire departments know the type of business activities at each location for emergency response.

Definition of “Business”

The requirement applies to all commercial operations—wholesale, retail, and industrial (including manufacturing, processing, assembling, repairing, or reconditioning of goods).
It does not apply to any commercial activity defined as a home-based business under the Porter Zoning Ordinance.
