Call to Artists: The 2026 Orland Town Council Sculpture Program

Theme: The Light of Liberty

Important Dates:
Submissions Accepted: NOW through April 30, 2026
Unveiling: July 8, 2026 (Celebrating the 250th Anniversary of the Liberty Bell!)

The Town of Orland invites artist proposals for a landmark sculpture to be installed in Memorial Park in honor of America’s 250th Semiquincentennial. We are seeking a signature piece that captures the brilliance and enduring hope of the American Spirit through the theme: "The Light of Liberty."

I. Artistic Vision

"The Light of Liberty" is a theme centered on illumination—both literal and metaphorical. We are looking for a work that acts as a beacon within the community, utilizing light to symbolize the founding ideals of freedom and truth.

To achieve this, the Town is prioritizing designs that incorporate:

  • Radiant Surfaces: The use of reflective materials such as polished stainless steel, mirrored finishes, or glass elements designed to catch and refract the natural light of the sunrise and sunset.
  • Internal Illumination: Integrated LED lighting systems that allow the sculpture to "glow" from within, ensuring the piece remains a vibrant landmark during evening hours.
  • Inscriptive Elements: The thoughtful integration of Bible Scripture into the design (e.g., etched into glass, laser-cut through metal to allow light to pass through, or engraved on the pedestal). These verses should reflect the spiritual foundations of liberty and the American journey.

II. Technical Requirements

  • Materials: Must be permanent, weather-resistant, and high-durability (e.g., Marine-grade steel, architectural glass, stone).
  • Power: Artists must include specifications for low-voltage LED integration (solar-powered options are encouraged).
  • Size Constraints: * Height: Minimum 3 feet; Maximum 8 feet.
    • Footprint: Maximum 5' x 5' base.
  • Installation: The work must be designed to be securely anchored to an existing concrete pad in Memorial Park.

III. The Orland Context

While this is a national celebration, the selection committee will favor designs that subtly acknowledge Orland’s Heritage, showing how the "Light of Liberty" has shone through our local history and community character.
