Public Works employees will continue picking up minor tree debris.

Tuesday 8/18/26 9:30PM Power has been restored to Rak Road and Wahl Street. NIPSCO crews and tree removal services were at McCool Road (near Shadyside Mobile Home Community), West North Boo Road, and South Boo Road today.
Clean up continues. Crews used the grapple truck to clear tree debris on Haglund, Coan Street and Stanley Street. The grapple truck will make rounds through town with streets posted nightly. Crews are also out in the chipper. Residents may take tree debris to the town property on Westport Road.
A 15 yard dumpster will be available for FOOD WASTE ONLY. It will be located at the Street Department, 310 Navajo Trail for 7 days or until it is full.
All town offices and building have phone and internet, and are open to the public during business hours. Residents are welcome to stop in to cool off, charge devices, and enjoy complimentary coffee, water, and a variety of snacks.

Local Disaster Emergency Declaration Extended 30 days RESOLUTION NO. 2026-11 RESOLUTION OF THE BURNS HARBOR TOWN COUNCIL DECLARING A LOCAL DISASTER EMERGENCY WHEREAS, the Town of Burns Harbor has been impacted by or is immediately threatened by a natural disaster that caused significant damage throughout the community, including downed trees, debris, damaged infrastructure, hazardous road conditions, power-related hazards, and other threats to public health and safety; and WHEREAS, this incident began developing on August 11, 2026, and as of August 17, 2026 has left hundreds of residents without electricity or essential services; and WHEREAS, the lack of electricity and essential services throughout Burns Harbor has significantly impacted residents and businesses and has disrupted government operations; and WHEREAS, hazardous conditions continue to exist throughout the Town, and unnecessary travel may interfere with emergency response, damage assessment, debris removal, utility restoration, and other recovery operations; and WHEREAS, the Burns Harbor Town Council desires to work with Porter County, the State, and federal agencies to address and respond to this local disaster emergency. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT AND IT IS HEREBY RESOLVED by the Burns Harbor Town Council as follows: SECTION 1: The Burns Harbor Town Council declares that a local disaster emergency exists in the Town, and that we hereby invoke and declare those portions of the Indiana Code which are applicable to the conditions and have caused the issuance of this Resolution and Declaration, to be in full force and effect in the Town for the exercise of all necessary emergency authority for the protection of the lives and property of the people of the Town and the restoration of local government with a minimum of interruption. SECTION 2: This Resolution and Declaration was approved by the Town Council of Burns Harbor at a meeting of the Town Council held on August 17, 2026, conducted in accordance with Indiana’s Open Door Law. SECTION 3: Reference is hereby made to all appropriate laws, statutes, ordinances, and resolutions and particularly to Indiana Code 10-14-3-29. SECTION 4: All public offices and employees of Burns Harbor are hereby directed to exercise the utmost diligence in the discharge of duties required of them for the duration of the emergency and in execution of emergency laws, regulations, and directives, both State and local. SECTION 5: All citizens are called upon and directed to comply with necessary emergency measures, to cooperate with public officials and disaster services forces in executing emergency operations plans, and to obey and comply with the lawful directions of properly identified officers. SECTION 6: All operating forces will direct their communications and requests for assistance and operations directly to the Porter County Emergency Management Agency. SECTION 7: The Town Council continues and renews the Declaration of Local Disaster Emergency dated August 12, 2026. This Resolution and Declaration of Local Disaster Emergency shall remain in effect until the threat of this natural disaster subsides or is mitigated, or the Town Council terminates this Resolution and Declaration. SECTION 8: The Declaration shall be given prompt and general publicity and shall be promptly filed with the Clerk-Treasurer of the Town of Burns Harbor ALL OF WHICH IS RESOLVED AND DECLARED by the Town Council of the Town of Burns Harbor on this 17th day of August, 2026. Monday, 8/17/2026 8:45pm No change during the day to the list of neighborhoods with power restored. The Local Disaster Emergency declaration was extended for 30 days through September 16, 2026. NIPSCO tree removal contractors began work clearing McCool Road (near Shadyside Mobile Home Community) this afternoon. Porter County Emergency Management Agency has reported to the town that they have specialized crews arriving tomorrow to clear West North Boo Road, McCool Road (near Shadyside Mobile Home Community) and South Boo Road. Public Works crews are out picking up minor debris. The grapple truck will be delivered Tuesday. Residents may take debris to the town property on Westport Road. All town buildings and offices have phones and internet, and are open to the public. Saturday, 8/15/2026 6:00pm Town leadership, Public Works, Fire, Police, Building and Park Departments continue to navigate the aftermath of the storm. Our Town departments have come together to support one another and, ultimately, our residents and business community. Staff across departments continue to work tirelessly to maintain services, address needs, and help our community recover from the storm.
The Town Council is prioritizing support for our employees. Ensuring they have the resources needed to safely perform their work remains a top priority.
The Council declared a Local Emergency Disaster and is organizing a binder to document all resources that have been and will be used to maintain services and support recovery efforts. This documentation will be used to request reimbursement when it becomes available. The Local Emergency Disaster declaration will be extended for 30 days and will remain in effect through September 16, 2026.
The Council has been in communication with Porter County Emergency Management Agency to formally request assistance as it becomes available.
The Town Council and Fire Chief have maintained regular communication with NIPSCO. A request has been made to include Burns Harbor-specific numbers in outage reports.
Our firefighters have responded to a record number of calls, prioritizing Burns Harbor while also providing mutual aid to neighboring communities. They have also been going throughout Town checking on generator safety, talking with residents, and providing important information and resources.
The Town Complex is open to the community every day during regular office hours, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Evening and weekend hours are also posted on social media and the Town website. Please feel free to come in and charge phones and battery packs, cool off in the A/C or just get out of the weather. G's Dogs & More will also be here today selling food. The town has power to lift stations 5 and 6 on Old Porter Road. Lift station 2 and 3 have dedicated generators. A mobile generator is being rotated between lift stations 1 and 4 to pump down. Our three fulltime employees are working around the clock to maintain wet well levels. Our Public Works Superintendent is coordinating equipment and scheduling employees for major clean up to begin next week when the grapple truck arrives on Tuesday. In the meantime, our trucks will be picking up minor debris that is at the roadside as time allows while they keep the lift stations pumping. |

Friday, 8/14/2026 8:30am Today our public works staff continue to maintain sanitary operations and begin clean up of minor debris. You’ll see trucks out and part time workers picking up debris and small branches from roadsides to move to the Westport parking lot. Next week, we anticipate the delivery of a grapple truck to begin removing major debris from roadsides.
Our three full-time public works department (general maintenance, street and sanitation staff) continue working around the clock to maintain sanitary services.
We are fortunate to have two volunteer firefighters who are now working part time to support our clean up efforts.
Town Hall is open today from 8am - 10pm.

Our public works department (general maintenance, street and sanitation staff) and emergency services have been working around the clock since the storms came through yesterday.
Currently, all main roads in town are passable and lift stations are operating normally with the assistance of generators. Keeping our lift stations at normal wet well levels is a main priority.
Staff continue to drive town and clean up debris as time and priorities allow.
The town complex is operating on generators and the town hall is open. Please feel free to come in and charge phones and battery packs, cool off in the A/C or just get out of the weather.
