Indiana Transparency Portal

Indiana MPH partners with the State Comptroller’s Office (formerly the State Auditor) to maintain and continuously improve the Indiana Transparency Portal. Originally launched in 2010 to promote visibility, openness and accountability in state government, the ITP has evolved significantly over time.

Starting in 2018, MPH enhanced the design, look, and feel of the portal, making it more intuitive and visually engaging for users. These improvements were achieved through collaboration with the Indiana Office of Technology (IOT) and by leveraging data analytics and visualization tools to deliver a modern, user-friendly experience.

What you can do on ITP

  • Explore State Finances – Access detailed expenditure and revenue data.
  • Review Contracts & Grants – See agreements entered into by state agencies.
  • Check Employee Information – View salary and employment details for state employees.
  • Track Assets – Learn about properties, vehicles and equipment owned by the state.
  • Discover Vendor Relationships – Find out who does business with Indiana.
  • Access Local Government Data – Examine financial information for local units and schools.

The Indiana Transparency Portal continues to evolve, providing clear, accessible and actionable data to promote trust and accountability in government.

Enhancing the Expenditure Search feature

When the Indiana Transparency Portal launched in 2010, analytical tools were limited. The State’s financial data was presented to the public in a table format with narrow filtering capabilities. The image to the left is a snapshot of the State’s expenditure data during that time.

The amount and detail of the data was also limited due to the complexity of the data source and the vast number of rows that exist in the system.

For example, a single expense could have multiple rows for various amounts with different codes and descriptions. This was difficult to show with the tools available at the time; therefore, data was aggregated to make sharing the information easier.

The new analytical tools and the expertise of employees with MPH and IOT have enabled Indiana to offer a significantly-enhanced presentation, ensuring that Hoosiers can access a meaningful and accessible picture of the State's financial data.

For those who want to utilize the information for their own research, the data is also available to download in an XLSX or CSV file on the Indiana Data Hub. More supporting detail is also available there.
