Biographical Note:

John Martin Walker was born in 1843, the eldest of five children of Alexander and Elizabeth Walker, Cold Springs, Dearborn County, Indiana.  He enlisted in Company A, 7th Indiana Infantry, in September 1861. He was wounded at the Wilderness and also Petersburg.  He mustered out in 1864, after three years service.  He married a neighbor, Emma Regan, and had three children.  Emma died giving birth to the third child.  He married Mirenda Riddle, who had fifteen children.  John died near Spaulding, Idaho, on June 25, 1929. 

Scope and Content Note:

Article entitled “You Will Not Cut My Leg Off” tells about John Walker’s life, from age 18, five months after Fort Sumter was attacked, until he died on June 25, 1929. The story tells about battle wounds, sanitation, malnutrition, hospitals.  There is information about the treatment of wounds, care of the injured and hospital conditions. John suffered a leg injury which never completely healed.  It still had an open ulcer the day he died. The Adjutant General’s certificate dated June 6, 1977 gives information on John Walker from the Archives Division of the Indiana State Library. Pages 40-41, and 91-93 xeroxed from Report of the Adjutant General, volume 2, gives information about the three-years service of the Seventh Regiment, Indiana Volunteers. Summary of the Principal Events, from August 17, 1861 to Oct. 27, 1893 (five pages) of the 7th Regiment. Map and one-page identification sheet. Principal Engagements John Walker Participated in, 1861-1864.
