Biographical Note:

Francis Marion Van Pelt was an officer in the 17th Indiana Regiment (1861-1865), serving in Wilder’s Brigade in Tennessee; employed by the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad in Galesburg, Illinois (1865-1870); married Amanda Slater, Galesburg (1868); worked in the post office, internal revenue service, and private business in Atlanta, Georgia (1870-1893); resident of Anderson, Madison County (1895-1929(; Anderson Justice of the Peace (1902-1908?, 1919-1929); active in Civil War veterans organizations; state commander, Grand Army of the Republic (1925).

Scope and Content Note:

The collection includes Van Pelt’s family correspondence (1863-1929), including letters from Van Pelt and his wife in Atlanta, Georgia (1870-1892), and letters from relatives in Galesburg and Wataga, Illinois (1878-1907), Creston, Iowa (1878-1909), Lincoln, Nebraska (1894), Taiban, New Mexico (1908-1909), and Pittsburg and Yeoman, Carroll County (1863-1865, 1883-1896), Anderson (1873-1909), and Monticello, White County (1879-1890); orders, quartermasters reports, and other official military papers of Van Pelt and the 17th Indiana (1862-1865); papers regarding veterans activities, including letters to Van Pelt from James T. Wilder (1903-1917), reunion record books and scrapbooks for the 17th Indiana and Wilder’s Brigade (1880-1925), and Van Pelt’s speech as GAR commander (1925); family scrapbooks (1910s); and record book of the Anderson Township Progressive Club, for which Van Pelt was secretary.  Also included are papers of Van Pelt’s son-in-law, Henry M. Phipps, and his family, including Phipps’ letters to his wife in Indianapolis from New York, England, and France while he was working with the YMCA during World War I (1918-1919); and diaries (1890-1921) of George A. Phipps, a farmer near Pendleton, Madison County.
