Allen County

Allen County, in the northeast corner of the state, was organized in 1823 and named for John Allen, a State Senator from Kentucky who defended Fort Wayne. The county is home to the former headquarters of the Miami Indians. In the 1800s the Wabash and Erie Canal began at its county seat, Fort Wayne.

Greene County, named for Major General Nathaniel Greene, a Revolutionary War figure, was established in 1821. Bloomfield became the official county seat in 1824, after the original county seat, Burlington, was found to be nearly waterless. Hamilton County was founded in 1823 and is named for Alexander Hamilton, the first U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, who was killed in a famous duel with Aaron Burr. Its seat is Noblesville, which was the location of the murder trial of D.C. Stephenson, the Grand Dragon of the Indiana Ku Klux Klan in the early twentieth century. Additionally, it is reported that the cabin of William Conner, an early resident of Hamilton County, was the place that commissioners met in 1820 to designate Indianapolis as the state capital.

Monroe County

Monroe County was formed on January 14, 1818 and was named for James Monroe, the fifth president of the United States. There are differing stories about how the county seat of Bloomington got its name. According to one local legend the name was” suggested when a group of early settlers, gazing from an elevation commanding a view of the site, was impressed by the flowers and foliage” (WPA). Another tradition says the name honors an early settler, William Bloom.

Montgomery County

Montgomery County was formed in 1822, organized in 1823, and named for General Richard Montgomery, a Revolutionary War officer who was killed in the Battle of Quebec in 1775. The county is home to Shades State Park, which was established in 1947 and is intended primarily for hikers. It features more than 8 miles of trails that go past areas such as Shawnee Canyon, Kickapoo Ravine, Lover’s Leap, Devil’s Punchbowl, and Maidenhair Falls.

In 1821 the Indiana Legislature created Morgan County out of parts of what had been Delaware and Wabash Counties. It was named after Brigadier General Daniel Morgan, a hero of the American Revolution. Its county seat Martinsville was established in 1822 and was once known as the Artesian City for its mineral springs and health sanitariums.

Posey County

This county was organized in 1814 and named for General Thomas Posey, an officer in the Revolution and governor of the Indiana Territory, 1813-1816. Posey was a good friend to George Washington. The county seat is Mount Vernon. The Ohio River forms the southern boundary of the county, while the eastern boundary is formed by the Wabash River. The now famous settlement of the Harmony Society was located here in New Harmony in the early 1800s.

The county is located in northwestern Indiana and is named for General Count Casimir Pulaski who was killed in the Revolutionary War during the 1779 Siege of Savannah in Savannah, Georgia. European settlers purchased the land that comprises present day Putnam County from Delaware, Potawatomi, Miami, and Eel River Indians through the treaties of 1809 and 1818. By December 1821 the Indiana General Assembly approved an act organizing Putnam County. The county is named after the General Israel Putnam of the American Revolution. Greencastle was chosen as the county seat, named after Ephraim Dukes, who was from Greencastle, Pennsylvania.

Randolph County

The Indiana General Assembly authorized the formation of Randolph County in 1818. The name recognizes the North Carolina home of the area’s many Quaker settlers. Throughout the 19^th century, the county was home to three distinct settlements of free African-Americans. Numerous pieces of documentary evidence exist to that show that Randolph County was an important part of the Underground Railroad. The county seat is Winchester.

Ripley County

Southeastern Indiana’s Ripley County was officially organized on April 10, 1818. Versailles was selected as the county seat on April 27, 1818, and is one of only four Indiana county seats that never had railroad service. Ripley County’s name was selected to honor Eleazer Wheelock Ripley, founder of the 21^st United State Infantry Regiment and Brigadier General in the War of 1812.

Rush County

Rush County, with the county seat of Rushville, was organized in 1821 and named for Dr. Benjamin Rush, a physician and soldier in the Revolutionary War and one of the youngest signers of the Declaration of Independence. The county is known nationally for its rich farmland. Wendell L. Willkie, a 1940 Republican presidential nominee and the only native Hoosier to be nominated for the Presidency by a major political party, made his home here.

St. Joseph County

The Potowatomi Indians called the St. Joseph River Sagwasibi, or “mystery river.” As the county’s namesake, the river was explored by Robert de La Salle in 1679 when his crew reached a spot on the west bank of the river near present-day South Bend, its county seat. His men set up camp between the St. Joseph and Kankakee Rivers. St. Joseph County was established in 1830 and South Bend was incorporated in 1865.

Shelby County was named for Isaac Shelby, the first governor of Kentucky and an officer in the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. The county was organized in 1822 and is known for housing one of Indiana’s earliest railroads. The old lobby of the Carnegie Library located in its county seat, Shelbyville, contains a bronze plaque listing the soldiers from the county who fought in the Revolutionary War.

Spencer County

Spencer County is named in honor of Captain Spier Spencer, a Corydon sheriff and tavern keeper, who died after leading his company of “Yellow Jackets” into the Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811. Abraham Lincoln’s mother, Nancy Hanks Lincoln, and his sister, Sarah Lincoln, are buried in the county and Lincoln himself spent his boyhood here from 1816 to 1830. It was established in 1818 and its county seat is Rockport.

Sullivan County

Sullivan County was named for Daniel Sullivan, who became a scout and guide for American colonists during the American Revolution after he spent part of his boyhood with Native Americans in Pennsylvania. He was killed while delivering messages from Vincennes, IN to Louisville, KY. Sullivan County is known for its coal production and was a pioneer in surface-mine reclamation in the early 20^th century.

Switzerland County

Switzerland County was named by John Dufour, an early Swiss settler who began a vineyard there in 1801 with his siblings – one of the first communities of this type in the U.S. The county was organized in 1814 and the county seat was named Vevay, after Dufour’s home in Vevay, Switzerland. The George Ash house in Lamb, Indiana is thought to be the state’s oldest extant brick house, built between 1798 and 1803.

White County

White County was organized in 1834 and named for Isaac White, friends with William Henry Harrison and Joseph Hamilton Daviess. Isaac White was killed in the Battle of Tippecanoe. Most of White County is used for farming but also has Lake Shafer and Freeman Lake, used heavily for recreation.

Whitley County

Whitley County was organized in 1839 and was named for Kentuckian Col. William Whitley, a cousin of George Rogers Clark. Chief Little Turtle of the Miami was born in what is now Union township. Another notable resident was Thomas Riley Marshall, who served as Indiana Governor from 1909-1913 and as Vice President of the United States under President Woodrow Wilson.
