Vincennes, Indiana Territorial Capital

Congress established the Indiana Territory in 1800 and made Vincennes its Capital. The Territory included what is now Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin and part of Minnesota.  While serving as the first governor of the Indiana Territory, future president William Henry Harrison built a mansion that became known as Grouseland. Lewis and Clark stopped at Grouseland in 1806 on their way to the Falls of the Ohio and then Washington, D.C. when returning from the expedition.
